Winterizing Your Home

As I sit here on Nov 17th, it is still 81 degrees outside in North Texas, but winter is right around the corner and more Texans are ready than ever to prepare their homes for winter. Winterizing your home can be the safest bet to help home owners prevent another disaster like so many homes faced in Snaowmagedon.

Here are some tips for the best ways to winterize your home this winter:

  1. Insulate Your Pipes- One of the biggest problems that happened with the big winter storm in February was that many North Texas Homeowners had not prepared their pipes ahead of time. The most common ways to insulate your pipes is to either put foam sleeves around them or use insulated wraps that you wind around your pipes. If you have any areas that are difficult to reach or that you may not feel comfortable doing yourself, search for plumbers on the Homester app.

  2. Shut Down Your Sprinkler System- For homeowners who have a sprinkler system in their yard, this could be one of the most looming dangers for your home when it comes to winterization. If you leave excess water in your system, it posses the threat of freezing in the pipes and causing damage if the temperature drops below freezing. So it’s not only important to shut off your sprinkler system, but it’s also important to properly drain the system before winter. Check out this helpful video we found on YouTube: How To Winterize Your Sprinklers.

These are good tips to start with. More so than anything, just make sure that you are prepared for what the possibilities are with your home this upcoming winter.

Most North Texans don’t take a winter threat seriously, but after the winter storm this year, make sure that you are looking into the things you can be doing to help prepare your home for the winter.
